“I wanna rock,” because Rock of Ages is coming back to New York!
Set in 1987, Rock of Ages tells the story of Sherrie, an aspiring actress, and Drew, a wannabe rocker, who fall in love while working for the most famous club on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. The couple attempts to navigate the world of rock and roll, which faces trouble due to the sleazy mishaps of rock legend, Stacee Jaxx, and anti-rocker land developers, who seek to demolish the club.
The decade-old musical, which New York Daily News dubbed as “unapologetically silly,” will return to New York this summer at New World Stages, where it opened in 2008. The show will run for a limited time, opening on June 19 and playing its last show on September 29.
Rock of Ages, which features music from legendary artists such as Journey, Bon Jovi, and Styx, initially debuted off-Broadway in 2008. It then moved to Broadway in 2009, where it ran for six years at the Brooks Atkinson and Helen Hayes Theatres.
Since leaving New York, Rock of Ages has completed several national and international tours, launched a book, and been adapted into a film, which premiered in 2012.
The limited engagement run, which stay true to the original show, has not yet announced its cast.
I was raised to know “Don’t Stop Believin’” before I knew my own name, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that I’m a fan of Rock of Ages. The show brilliantly unites the eccentricity of the 80s with the timelessness of Broadway, making it (forgive me) “nothin’ but a good time” to its audiences.
If you’re feeling nostalgic or want to channel your inner “jukebox hero,” I recommend visiting New World Stages this summer. I know that I will!
