Apparently, proms aren’t just for school gyms and musical theatre, because Broadway’s The Prom is dancing its way to Netflix!
Ryan Murphy, the creator behind hit television shows such as Glee and Scream Queens, announced at the show’s charity performance on Tuesday that he will be turning the musical into a Netflix film.
The Prom, which opened on Broadway in November 2018, follows the story of Emma, a teen who desires to take her girlfriend to prom against the wishes of her high school’s conservative PTA. After hearing about her plight, a band of Broadway rejects attempts to aid Emma in her mission, creating a series of hilarious and unfortunate events.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy, who is both a member and a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, chose to create the project because he was “so taken” with the show’s message.
The night of his announcement, Murphy posted on his Instagram account about his love for the show.
“The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt, and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway. It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving, spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights,” Murphy said.
In my opinion, the musical’s score is not unique or groundbreaking on Broadway, but its message is powerful and undeniable. The Prom has a relatable role for every audience member, appealing comedy, and a youthfulness that reminds every adult of their own prom night, for better or for worse. I am curious to see how Murphy will adapt such a unique show for Netflix’s audience. For the sake of the musical and its fan base, I hope that he does The Prom justice.
The film is currently poised for a premiere in September 2020.
