Dreams are about to come true, because Wonder is coming to Broadway!
The musical, which will be based off of the 2017 film of the same name, is currently under development, according to Deadline.
Wonder tells the story of August “Auggie” Pullman, a boy who was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome. Auggie, who possesses intelligence and poise beyond his years, battles ostracism from his peers as he attempts to navigate public school for the first time.
The award-winning tale was penned by author R.J. Palacio in 2012 and then adapted into a blockbuster movie five years later. Palacio, along with Hamilton producer Jill Furman and the Lionsgate film company, is spearheading the creation of the musical.
Palacio recently shared his excitement about the project with a Broadway.com representative.
“I am beyond happy and grateful that Wonder is being adapted for theater by this incredible team. What I’ve always loved the most about musical theater is its timelessness, its ability to resonate around the world and across generations. That Wonder and its message of kindness is to become part of that canon for the ages is, quite literally, a dream come true,” Palacio said.
Personally, I loved both the book and film versions of Wonder, and I will be curious to see how it translates on the live stage. Over the past few years, audiences have continuously been wowed by child-centric productions such as Matilda and Annie, and I predict that Wonder, if executed correctly, will have the same effect. Wonder is the true definition of a “heart-warming” story, and I think that it will be a welcome reprieve from Broadway’s heavier shows (looking at you, Dear Evan Hansen). Welcome, Wonder, we can’t wait to meet you!
Casting, debut dates, and a creative team for Wonder are unannounced at this time.
